New Unworn Ankle Wedge Heeled Black Moda in Pelle Leather Boots UK 8 / EU 42

New Unworn Knee High Laced Heeled Black Hush Puppies Leather Boots UK 9 / EU 43

I am hoping to get some money to go towards college, so I hope someone is interested in either of these. Unfortunately there may be a few more posts like this scattered throughout the year, but hopefully I'll also be posting better content as well.

I am very sorry for this unplanned hiatus, long time readers will know I have a lot of depression issues and these tend to flair up quite badly around Christmas/New Year. Hopefully I'll have a few posts about my jewellery course up soon.

Thank you for your patience. :)

Day 30: Its Hard To Dance With The Devil On Your Back

Day 30 – Your favorite song at this time last year:

Shake It Out ~ Florence & The Machine

My brother will tell you that I almots drove him insane last year playing this song on constant repeat. I can still listen to this whole album like that, its absolute brilliance.

Day 29: Walking On The Beaches Looking At The Peaches.

Day 29 – A song from your childhood:

 Peaches ~ The Stranglers

I remember singing along with this on car trips unaware of its obvious sexual meanings. I thought it was just a nice song about peaches, walking around in the summer & it being very hot. Haha, the innocence of youth.

Day 28: Biting Keeps Your Words At Bay

Day 28 – A song that makes you feel guilty:

Bad Habit ~ The Dresden Dolls

Trigger Warning for discussion of self harm.

Thursday, January 17, 2013

Day 27: I Want To Tell You That I'm Sorry

Day 27 – A song that you wish you could play:

I'm Going To Stop Pretending That I Didn't Break Your Heart ~ Eels

This song is so beautiful it hurts. I think it would be fun to play when I want to mope. Can someone please grant me the ability to sing and play instruments?

Wednesday, January 16, 2013

Day 26

Day 26 – A song that you can play on an instrument:

4 Minutes 33 Seconds ~ John Cage

Yes, I could sit with an instrument in silence. I would love to play a musical instrument, but I have no skill in this area what so ever. I have tried several times, but I believe it is not to be.

Day 25: Life is Full of Mystery, Yeah.

Day 25 – A song that makes you laugh:

Storm by Tim Minchin

A bit of a cop out choosing a comedy musician, but everyone should give Tim Minchin a listen, he is fantastic.

New Header & Navigation Courtesy of Lauren at Slowburn Fastburn!

You may have noticed that I have a fabulous new header and navigation links. If not, look up a bit, I promise its worth your while. ;)

I was lucky enough to get this made for me for free by the fantastic Lauren at Slowburn Fastburn, after she offered this as a prize for the first person who commented. I actually waited 35 minutes to comment because my anxiety is such that the idea of winning something and therefore having someone with a great blog, looking at my silly, little blog was incredibly stressful. It sounds silly, but that's how anxiety works, the idea of winning something makes me hyperventilate!

Fortunately, I did end up commenting and getting the opportunity to get a blog overhaul, which was badly needed. I have many talents, but graphic design is not one of them.

Lauren is now offering a variety of blogger and shop packages, as well as website design and business cards. Here are her portfolio & rates. I have to say, I would really reccommend working with Lauren, she's a very creative individual and it was really fun working with her. She also listened well, really understood what I wanted and replied very promptly. I'm really over the moon with how its come out.

Now, be honest, what do you think of my blog's new look?

Day 24: At Least I Fucking Tried.

Day 24 – A song that you want to play at your funeral:

Eulogy ~ Frank Turner

I KNOW, so much Frank Turner, but this one fits perfectly. Its exactly what I would want and what I aspire to be able to say on my deathbed.

Day 23: No Hope For A Clean Amputation

Day 23 – A song that you want to play at your wedding:

This one was hard because I'm not sure I want to get married. Also, I kind of hate the bit of society that says if you're not in a relationship then you are a not whole, that if you end your days alone then your life was wasted. Its bullshit.

But hypothetically?

You Grew On Me ~ Tim Minchin

You can't beat this song for hilarity and romance, in my humble slightly fucked up opinion.

Umberto Giannini Painted Lady Make-Up Palettes

I'll be the first to admit I am not the best candidate for beauty blogging. I can put on lipstick, foundation and mascara, anything further than that confuses and astounds me. This year I am trying to play with my make-up collection a bit more and I'd like to do a few reviews and swatches, which is what I am doing today.

I've been a fan of Umberto Giannini's hair products for quite a while now, they can be a little pricey, but recently they've been in Boots' sale. I cannot reccommend there "Backcomb in a Bottle" or "Rock 'n Roll Extreme Hairspray" enough, they are fab for making big, grunge hairstyles. While browsing their products on the Boots wesbite I saw that they have branched out into make-up, nail wraps and hair accessories. As seen before on this blog, I have a bit of a thing for Shakespeare, especially Ophelia, so when I saw that the two Painted Lady palettes were called Lady Beatrice and Lady Ophelia, well I think you can guess which one I chose!

Unfortunately, the palette I received was Lady Beatrice, so I returned it. This in its way was a stroke of luck as by this point these palettes were half price in the Boots sale going down from £8 to £4.

 [L-R: Lady Beatrice, Lady Ophelia]

Both palettes are solid, black, plastic and have lovely images of ladies with Umberto Giannini's signature glamourous, yet grungey look. Inside the palettes are 4 eyeshadows, 2 lip colours, 2 mini brushes and a butterfly stencil.

"The Umberto Giannini Painted Lady Beatrice and Ophelia Palettes have darkly smouldering eye and lip colours for grunge glamour with a limited edition butterfly stencil."

Lady Ophelia:

As you can see each of the eyshadows have little butterflies raised on them. None of the colours have names, so I'm going clockwise around for each swatch.

The top swatches are straight from the palette and the bottom ones are with Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base.

First swatch ~ a pale, beige shimmer
Second swatch ~ a slightly darkened olive shimmer
Third swatch ~ a reddish brown shimmer
Fourth swatch ~ a black packed with silver glitter
Lip swatch 1 ~ a light pink, with gold shimmer
Lip swatch 2 ~ a darkened red, with gold shimmer

Straight from the palette, I was a little disapointed, they colours are quite sheer and the sparkle which is quite clear in the palette is missing. These top swatches are with one sweep of the brush and the colour can be built up a little. With a good primer the colour comes out much better and seem to show the glitter in each colour a lot better too. The colours are very soft and seem to blend well.

Honestly, while I can see myself using the eyeshadows, I don't think I'll ever use the lip colours.

In this palette, they were stiff and quite hard to even get onto a brush. Then when applied to the lips they were horrible, sticky and quite uncomfortable, which is a shame as I quite like the colours even though they're a little sheer and not my usual style.

 Lady Beatrice:

First swatch ~ a pale cream shimmer
(It is different from the first in the previous palette, much paler.)
Second swatch ~ a grey shimmer with a hint of green
Third swatch ~ a blackened purple shimmer
Fourth swatch ~ a black shimmer with silver glitter
(Very similar to the previous palette's black, but it is darker and more matte.)
Lip swatch 1~ a very light glittery pink
Lip swatch 2 ~ a subtley shimmery plum

I personally prefer the colours in the other palette, but the dark purple is very nice. Obviously, once again straight out of the palette they are very sheer, but can be bult up or strengthened with a primer. I know some people do prefer sheerer eyeshadow, but when the palette says it good for grunge looks you'd assume the colours would be quite strong and dark.

Strangely, in this palette the lip colours were much softer and easier to swatch. Both palettes were kept in the same place, so I'm sure one was not warmer than the other. Very odd, that they'd be so different. I wish I could say the formula was better in this palette too, but it wasn't. After swatching these my lips were so dry and uncomfortable I had to immediately find my lip balm and slather it on!

Overall, at the price that I bought them I'm okay with these palettes, but if I had bought them at full price (£8 each) then I'd be very disapointed. I like the eyeshadows, the colours are nic, soft and the colour can be easily brought out with an application of primer. Though I am never putting my lips through with those glosses again!

I'd probably not try any of Umberto Giannini's cosmetics at full price after this experience unless I read that the formulas have improved. I would like to try their nail wraps though.

My Verdict: 4.5/10. Would not repurchase.

Day 22: I Drink 'Cause I'm Dry

Day 22 – A song that you listen to when you’re sad:

The Next Round ~ Frank Turner

I know, I know, do I listen to anything but Frank Turner, but this song is so powerful to me. I grew up with alcoholic parents and drinking has been a huge influence in my life. This song provokes so many feelings in me.

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Day 21: I Want To Dance

Day 21 – A song that you listen to when you’re happy:

Four Simple Words ~ Frank Turner

Whwn you're happy you want to dance, when you want to dance listen to this song. :)

Friday, January 11, 2013

Day 20: I Am Scared Like You

Day 20 – A song that you listen to when you’re angry:

Cold and Ugly [live] ~ Tool

Tool are one of my favourite bands, there's nothing like screaming along to one of their songs to get your anger out. This is a great example of that.

Day 19: I Keep Having Dreams

Day 19 ~ A Song From Your Favorite Album:

I Am Disappeared ~ Frank Turner

From the album "England Take My Bones", if you buy it, get the deluxe edition for excellent extras.

Yes, I am choosing a lot of Frank Turner, but he is my favourite artist. :)

Day 18: Eat Quickly, Drive Faster, Make More Money Now

Day 18 – A Song That You Wish You Heard On The Radio:

I Can't Get Behind That ~ William Shatner (feat. Henry Rollins)

Is William Shatner the greatest person on earth?

That is a rhetorical question.

You should listen to his album.

OotD: If Music Was The Food Of Love, Then I'd Be A Fat Romantic Slob

Velvet Jacket ~ Domino Dollhouse
Tartan Skirt ~ Next
Shakespeare Quote Top ~ Tee & Cake at Topshop
Metallic Socks ~ ASOS
Ophelia Necklace ~ Katherine Richmond
Spiked Headband ~ ASOS
Cross Earrings ~ ASOS
Black Messenger Bag ~ Vintage
Creepers ~ Underground

As soon as I put this top on I knew I had to go a little Shakespeare overboard.

The top has a quote from 'Twelfth Night', my necklace is based around Ophelia from 'Hamlet' and my lipgloss is Paul & Joe from their 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' collection. If I'd known I was going to do this I would also be wearing my Ophelia A-England nail polish and my Ophelia Umberto  Giannini make-up palette which is on its way to me.

Yes, I have a problem in which I buy anything based around Ophelia, though most Shakesperian heroines can get me twitching for my debit card!

Also, hurrah for a different background! These pictures were taken outside TK Maxx where I got some great stuff, which I am planning to vlog.

My poses are possibly even more awkward than usual because people kept walking past staring.

I don't think I've blogged this jacket before, which is a crying shame as it is wonderful. So wonderful in fact, that my mother has been routinely "borrowing" it. Haha.

Next time I will take better pictures of it, I promise.

I should have gotten a better picture of my eye make-up too, as the glitter eyeliner I am wearing looks awesome in person.

Loving the colour of my hair at the moment, next time I want to go a little more orange.

Does anyone else's literary obsessions leak into their fashion obsessions?

Day 17: There Was No Cracks To Grasp Or Gaps To Claw

Day 17 ~ A Song That You Hear Often On The Radio:

 Crying Lightning ~ Artic Monkeys

The only radio station I listen too is XFM a Manchester based rock/indie station. It is awesome.

First Vlog! TK Maxx Sale Haul.

Haven't I been wittering about making videos for months now? Well I have been doing so, but they were awful. Finally I've made one good enough to put here.

In which, I show you what I got in the TK Maxx sales and ramble a bit.

I would really appreciate feedback as this is my first video! Also, if anyone wants anything specific for me to make a video about, I'd love some suggestions. :)

Day 16: When Both Our Cars Collide

Day 16 ~ A Song That You Used To Love But Now Hate:

 Helena ~ My Chemical Romance

I used to be so My Chemical Romance obsessed. I have seen them 5 times live and god I own a lot of merchandise, but to be honest I can't listen to them anymore. Reminds me too much of being fifteen, which was not a good time in my life.

Day 15: Love is Free & Life is Cheap!

Day 15 ~ A Song That Describes You:

If I Ever Stray ~ Frank Turner

I am weirdly an optimist and a pessimist. I am a creative person who sees the best in other people, but finds it hard to see any good in myself. Though I think my wided eyed naivete wins out a lot of time, which I think is epitomised in this song.

Bolded sections are the most "me".

This has been the hardest and most interesting music challenge yet.
So, dear readers, what song would describe you?

Forgive me someone, for I have sinned
And I know not where I should begin
Some days it feels like you just can't win
No matter what you do or say.

Things didn't kill me but I don't feel stronger
Life is short but it feels much longer
You've lost that drive, you've lost that hunger
To pull yourself through the day.

But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow
And then drag me on back to shore!

'Cos love is free and life is cheap
As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat
I can't ask for anything more

Come on everybody sing it 1, 2, 3, 4

We've all got secrets that we hold inside
The worst little things that we try and defy
The worst one of all that you never can hide
Is that you're never quite as strong as you sound

So I'm sorry baby, for the times I've hurt you
Sorry friends, for the times I desert you
Most days it feels like I don't deserve you
No wonder that you're all still around

But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow
And then drag me on back to shore!

'Cos love is free and life is cheap
As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat
I can't ask for anything more

Come on everybody sing it 1, 2, 3, 4

Come on and join me in the water
Swim for hope
Sometimes it's hard to remember
I couldn't do this on my own

If ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow
And then drag me on back to shore!

'Cos love is free and life is cheap
As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat
I can't ask for anything more

I can't ask for anything more

The path I chose isn't straight and narrow
It wanders 'round like a drunken fellow
Some days it's hard for me to follow
But if you've got my back I'll go on.
If you've got my back I'll go on.

2013 Worlds Without End Women of Genre Fiction Reading Challenge

Quite a mouthful, I know! But, do not fear, I am here to explain.

The goal of the WWEnd Women of Genre Fiction Reading Challenge is to read 12 books, one each by a different woman author and review it by the end of the year. The genres in question are sci-fi, horror, fantasy and Worlds Without End is an amazing resource for these genres.

And that's not all! If your review gets chosen to be put onto their blog then your review will be put into a monthly poll, the winner of which will receive one of three prizes, which are $25, $15 and $10 amazon giftcards.

All you have to do is join the website and choose your authors, either all at once or as you progress through the year.

I'm really excited to go with this challenge as I am determined to read more this year, especially by woman writers. And there are a nice array to choose from some are well known, cult and lesser known, as well as modern and classic choices.

My first choice is Margaret Atwood and I'll be reading the Blind Assassin. I shall also be posting my reviews here.

Hope you enjoy my reviews or even check out the challenge if you like these genres.

Day 14: Our Love Will Never Die

Kind of the same as yesterdays theme, but hey I love showing a little diversity.

But I thought about it a little more deeply. What do most people know about me from this blog and maybe my twitter account too:

I am a white British lady in my early 20s, who is attending a jewellery course at college. I love fashion and dress a little gothic/punky. I knit and craft quite a bit. I love terrible television shows and spend too much time on the internet. My favourite singer is Frank Turner, and my favourite genre is probably rock or alternative.

Day 14 ~ A Song No One Would Expect You To Love:

Travelling Soldier ~ The Dixie Chicks

Did you think I'd like a country song?
(Maybe after I posted that Taylor Swift song yesterday.)

This song really brings a tear to my eye. I love it, no idea why, I don't think I even own any other Dixie Chicks songs.

Day 13: She wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts, she’s cheer captain and I respect her right to wear whatever she wants and participate in traditionally ‘feminine’ activities because I understand that life is not about condemning another woman’s personal choices just because she doesn’t ‘deserve’ the boy i have a crush on

I don't believe in having guilty pleasures, I think just because people think something you like is crap is no reason to be guilty. Celebrate the things you love!

Day 13: A Song That is a Guilty Pleasure:

You Belong With Me ~ Taylor Swift

I guess this is a song people wouldn't think I'd like, but really I have a soft spot for Taylor Swift. Yeah, she has massively problematic lyrics and the even the video has the "bad" girl in red, while Taylor is resplendant in white. Hello, symbolism, but I like it. You can sing and dance to it.

Its a fun song. I do hope Taylor's lyrics and music mature with her.

2013 New Year's Resolutions

Generally, I'm not one for New Year's resolutions, but after seeing so many wonderful posts on the subject, I've decided to give them a try.

1. Make a "Memory Jar".
The idea of this is you take a jar and everytime something good happens in 2013 you put a note in or a ticket stub from a movie you saw, note you were given or card you received. Then at the end of the year you read them all and get to relive all your wonderful moments from your year!

I think this sounds super fun. As someone with depression, I often overly focus on the negative, so being forced to acknowledge and relive all the good things in a year will be really good for me. Very pinterest, I know! Haha.

2. Learn to Apply Eye Make-Up.
This includes, eyeliner, eye shadow, fake eyelashes, etc. I am rubbish at it all! I'm so jealous of ladies who can do the grunge Brody Dalle look, smudgy, undone eyes. I have tried many times, but it always ends with me looking like someone has punched me.

This year I will actually break out all my lovely eyeshadow from Geek Chic and Shiro Cosmetics and learn how to blend, blend, blend.

3. Blog with Greater Quality and Variety.
I've been blogging a little over a year at this point and feel like I'm only just starting to get the hang of it to be honest! This is year of experimentation for me, I want to try new things, maybe expand what I blog about.

I would also really like to take part in some blogger challenges, but I'm not sure if there are any available to any blogger? I've only ever seen groups of friends do them together and I am rubbish at making friends. (Something else to work on.)

4. Get a Tattoo.
I've been locking down what I want my first tattoo to be for about 4/5 years and I have a few artists locally that I'm impressed with. I think this year is my year to get inked!

I just need to save up some money and I'll be well on my way to being a decorated woman.

5. Be More Thrift Shop Than High End.
This year I have to start being more frugal. I have enough make-up, I have enough clothes (that was hard to write!) and the money that goes towards these things could be going towards my education and my creative pursuits.

Though if I do want or need anything I want to do more plus size thrifting.

6. Get Fitter.
Note, this is not about weight loss, (It is definitely NOT about doing some ridiculous diet, so no diet talk, don't worry) but it is about the ability to go up a few sets of stairs and still be able to breathe! I have joined a gym and explained this, I expected there to be some backlash, but the trainer was great. He was very accepting of this and even included in my notes that I do not want to be weighed at any point. Success!

I also want to start doing yoga.

7. Make More Jewellery Outside of Class.
Even if it is just design work, I need to stretch my creative wings outside of the college classroom.

And yes, the above brooch is something I made in class!

8. Keep My Living Room and Bedroom Organised.
Boring, but I am super unorganised, so it has to be said. I will do this by tidying up every Sunday for at least an hour more if needed. I will put away my clothes when I clean them instead of just leaving them on a chair or the floor. Yes, I am such a 22 year old, my floor is my wardrobe, which is very bad!

I want to put some shelves up too, which will might end in disaster.

9. Art Journal Every Other Day
I was going to write daily, but I would have already broken this resolution! I might even start putting some of my sketches/ideas up here. I want to improve my sketching skills and force myself to not be a perfectionist, which sometimes prevents me from letting go and just drawing.

10. Focus More on My Mental Well Being.
This is so very vague. I've just realised I have a lot of issues to work out. Plus I have a lot of work to this year, applying to a foundation degree, trying to complete my BTEC, maybe trying to sell my jewellery. I would also like to find some work experience or internship to do metal work.

I'd like to add to this, that I would like to get out a little more. I tend to stick to the house and college, this year I would like to go to gigs, the cinema, art galleries, museums and festivals. It would be great if I could meet some new people, but I should not be afraid to do these things on my own as well. Most of all, I would like to go to some plus size fashion events, I've got my eye on Plus North this year. :)

I also want to challenge myself this year. I want to read 40 books this year, to say yes more and fight the fear.

I might expand or add to these as the year goes on.

What are your New Year's resolutions?

Day 12: Hope My Boyfriend Don't Mind It (Bleugh.)

Technically this was a song from a band you hate, but my brain won't co-operate, so I changed it to band/singer.

Day 12 ~ A Song From a Band/Singer You Hate:

I Kissed A Girl ~ Katy Perry

Eugh. A song by a straight woman about donning the persona of bisexuality to turn on men. Hello, male gaze and biphobia.

Nothing against pop music by the way, I'm not just into rock music, but I cannot stand Katy Perry myself.

Day 11: Some Of Use We Have Tattoos

Day 11 ~ A Song From Your Favourite Band:

 Tattoos ~ Frank Turner

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls are my favourite band. This song makes me want to get my act together and solidify my idea for my first tattoo. :)

Day 10: Sleep, Sweet Prince

I am tired.

Day 10 ~ A Song That Makes You Fall Asleep:

Little Bird, Little Bird ~ Elizabeth Mitchell

When I fist heard this on Futurama I scoured the internet to find it,  so sweet. :)
